Bus Service
There was some concern that some of the bus services to the village would be stopping. It has now been confirmed that in fact the present services are being maintained, but the numbers of the buses have changed. The County Council have agreed to provide a new time table board at the bus stop. Timetable information can also be found at the following web site-, http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/somerset/timetables/timetableindex.php
The service is 30,30a, 930 and also 630/632/633. Back to top
Footpaths
There are a number of very pleasant walks around the village on public footpaths. Most of these are marked with posts. They are walked regularly to check if they are accessible and all the gates are in good order. A map showing the footpaths and rights of way around Ilton is available from Mr C.Carden on 52582. Should You find any problems with any of the footpaths, please contact Mr Carden. Back to top
Chard & Ilminster Pensioners Forum
Pensioners of Ilton, are you fed up with big rises in Council Tax? Are you happy with your state pension and the minimal rises we are given each year? Do you like "means testing" as a method of claiming Pension Credit? Do you feel let down and ignored by Politicians?

Why not join us and increase the power of "the Pensioners voice", the grey vote.

We are not Politicians; we are not associated with any Political Party. We are an action group providing a co-ordinated collective campaigning voice on behalf of Pensioners in South Somerset. The more members we have the stronger we are and have more influence we can have when we lobby local councillors, MP?s and Parliamentary Candidates in next years general election.

We are affiliated to the National Pensioners Convention, which has over 1000 affiliated organisations from all over the country, with over1.5 million members. We are also members of the ?Is-it-Fair? campaign aiming for the reform or abolition of Council Tax.

There is no membership fee to join Chard & Ilminster Pensioners Forum; if you?re interested in joining we only ask for your name and address. There are some leaflets about he "Forum" available in the Village Shop, or you can telephone me for one on 53788.
You may like to come to our next meeting, which is taking place in Chard Guildhall on Friday 29th October 2004 at 10:30am.

St.Peter's Church Ilton
Readers of Ilton Talking will recall the widespread shock in the village during the summer of 2003,when a small group of village youngsters broke more than 40 panes of glass in the church windows. This thoughtless vandalism has now been repaired and protection against similar foolishness given to other windows.

The Parochial Church Council has had to divert around £600 of its funds including donations from other good causes to pay for this. I daresay that many villagers would think it only right that those that caused the damage should contribute towards the repairs and additional protection. They and anyone else, who wishes to contribute, may send their donation to the PCC Treasurer, Mr Colin Carden at Mudges Farm, Ilton.

The repair of the two tombstones that were also damaged in the churchyard has yet to be undertaken, and the Parish Council will doubtless be pleased to receive donations towards this work.

How do you want to see the future of ILTON. Would you like to see more homes built? The village Hall close? More heavy vehicles driving through our village? Loss of amenities? If you have an opinion we want to hear it Back to top
ILTON MEMORIAL HALL, Down but not out
Just a brief update on the hall - as you are all probably aware by now our hall was unsuccessful with it's second lottery application, the reason given that, although our application was good enough to secure funding and was recommended, there were "insufficient funds" to grant money to everyone's project - ours being one of them. We were further told that this would be the case for the foreseeable future and therefore any further applications would be unsuccessful too! However, although we are down we are not out!! Your committee are very dedicated and resolute that, someday, there will be a new village hall in Ilton and, even as you are reading this we are already looking at other alternatives. We will continue to fund raise and the next time we start to "shout" will be when we have secured the land and money for the new hall to start being built.

From dealing with local authorities, grant funders, charity grants, other halls and many other organisations over these past couple of years one thing in particular has become very clear. When our new hall is up it will have to be run far more business like (otherwise in 30 - 40 years time we will be in the same position that we are in now!) and to this end it is VITAL that we ensure our hall is in use at least five days a week (or 29 hours, whichever is the greater) and half of these hours are going to come from "outside" bookings. Now, it is these "outside" bookings that are going to sustain our hall and make it possible for the groups & residents of Ilton to have an affordable (and private - a facility which no other venue in Ilton can offer) venue for their groups & parties.

Therefore, we feel it is important that we build our hall on a site that is big enough to house both a hall and it?s own car park in order that we can attract the "outside" bookings , the very business that will help to keep us going & at the same time allow us to have an affordable venue thus "keeping our community together".

So???..do we stay where we are with a virtually shared car park and, as it currently stands, very little capital? Do we apply for more grants? ( we would need several to get us going and getting them to all come together is a virtually impossible task). If we stayed, where would we build the new hall bearing in mind the Cricket Club still dispute the boundary line? Or do we sell our land and raise the best part of the capital that way? If so, where do we go? These are the current questions facing us and ones we hope to resolve soon ? if you feel you can help us, or have any comments, then please contact any one of us and we?ll be only too pleased to listen!

Numbers to phone are; Jacqueline & Mark Bennett 54164, John Matravers 53918, Mandy Bulgin 55255, Tony Bell 54723, Tony & Hilary Miller 53531, June Harris 55845, June Male 57099, Chris Lock 53142, Mrs Blasdale 53907, Wendy Chipping 259072, Primrose Carter 54006 or Anita Chew 54471.
