3/1 Ilton Talking February 2003

Neighbourhood Watch
Would you like to join a club that is free, that helps to prevent crime, and only takes 2 hours each month and can save you money on your insurance?
Then Neighbourhood Watch needs you.

We are trying to involve all of Ilton, but we need your help.

How it works: firstly we need as many co-ordinators as possible. A co-ordinator can involve as many houses as they want. It may be a whole street, it does not matter, you choose. Then we ask you to be vigilant Anything you see that is suspicious, it may be a stranger walking up and down, a strange car at a strange time.

We then ask you to telephone two other co-ordinators who will in turn telephone two more and so on. This enables us to watch whatever it is and if necessary telephone the Police.

Once we have co-ordinators we will be able to hold an informative meeting with the Police to set up an official scheme.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE telephone the number below if you can spare just a little time and help to keep our village safe for all of us.

IT DOES WORK!!!

Please telephone Mandy Bulgin on 01460 55255 Back to top

New Web Site
As well as the inclusion on the South Somerset District Council Web Site, we now have our own village web site that can be updated very quickly with information about the village.

This can be found at www.iltontalking.ik.com

The site is provided free of charge to community groups.
It is still being developed and it is hoped to have information about all the village groups. If anyone can supply any photos of Ilton or have any history about the village that can be included on the site I would be most grateful. Also if you have any ideas of what you would like to see included on the site that may be useful please let me know.

You can either contact me via the web site or on 53382. Back to top
St Mary & St Peter's First School News
We hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and we wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

The Christmas plays went very well and congratulations to all children and staff who worked very hard to put on these productions. The fact that many children were not well made rehearsals difficult but all went well in the end.

The Carol Service was lovely and the grand total of £103.76 was sent to CLIC to help children suffering from leukaemia. Thank you to all who helped to raise this magnificent sum.

This half term promises to be quite busy with several dates to remember. On February 4th KS1 children are visiting Bristol for Science workshops about "Pushes and Pulls". KS2 will go in March.

An open day will be held on February 19th when parents can look at children?s work with the children. Refreshments will be served.

School breaks up for half term on Friday 21st February and re-opens on Tuesday 4th March. March 3rd is an INSET day for staff.

We are very keen this year to focus on children's reading and maths. We would encourage you to listen to your child/children read at home and write in the Reading Record how much was read and any comments you have. Teachers will hear children read as often as possible too. We believe that is very important for children to read to adults on a daily basis to practice new skills.
If you can spare time to hear readers in school, please talk to your child's class teacher.

Advance notice-
March 6th is World Book Day and we are planning activities in school to mark this day on March 7th. Details later.

We are considering holding a workshop/s for parents to show how we teach maths in school and how parents can help their children's maths development if they wish.
If you would be interested in attending please complete the form attached and return to school as soon as possible. Thank you.

March 4th is Shrove Tuesday and we will be holding the usual Egg Shackling, Decorated Egg Competition and cooking pancakes. The OFSTED inspector is curious to see Egg Shackling. Back to top
St Peter's Church
From the Team Vicar of the parishes of Ashill, Broadway, Donyatt, Horton, Ilton, Isle Abbots and Isle Brewers.

The Revd Dr Andrew Tatham
The Rectory, Broadway
ILMINSTER, TAl9 9RE
O146O 52559

I would like to thank everyone in Ilton for the warm welcome you have given Margaret and me since our arrival in late October. It is still early days, and I have not met everyone in the parish by a long way, but I hope that will change gradually over the coming months.

Although I live in Broadway, I am quite often in Ilton and can easily get over to see any one of you. There doesn't have to be a specific reason, but if you have just moved in, or would like a visit for any reason, please phone me (there is an answerphone if I am out). Similarly, I would be delighted to speak to anyone who is contemplating getting married, or having a member of the family baptised, or to anyone who would be interested in learning more about the Christian faith and perhaps in confirmation.

It would also be good to speak to anyone who is interested in caring for the church in any way, whether in practical matters, or in the work of the Parochial Church Council. Finally, the church is here in Ilton to serve all of those who live in Ilton, but it is not a job I can do on my own, and neither can I guess what your needs are So do make contact, either by letter or phone, or by coming along to one of the services, Sunday by Sunday.

I look forward to seeing you and hearing from you.
In the meantime, all good wishes and blessings to you from

Andrew.

Recreation Field
Skating Area
Plans for the new Skating Area are well underway. Consultations have now taken place with the young people at the School and youth club about the shape, equipment and layout of the area. Once this has been completed work can begin on constructing the surface.

BMX Track
The BMX track, which was built last year, will be having some maintenance
work done shortly. This will involve recovering the surface, which has worn
due to use and weathering. Material was left over following the construction
which will be used for this purpose. Back to top

HOORAY!! We all say! At last the application form for the national lottery has been sent in and as far as we are aware we believe we are now in line to be heard at their March meeting so it?s fingers crossed until then.
Whilst we are on the subject of the lottery form it should be mentioned that Ilton owes a great deal to the dedicated few who have persevered with this form. ?Fill in a form, shouldn?t take too long? we all said ....... how wrong we were! The lottery form itself is very complicated and really needs the attention of professional fund raisers, but as we are all purely volunteers it took a long time with many meetings taking place and lots of advice listened to. Not only did we have to fill out a long and complicated form but then we had to come up with a business plan, something none of us had ever had dealings with before. So these two combined just added to the headaches and, in particular, the time factor, (eventually we did seek professional advice on this). In conclusion, the finished document is almost 200 pages long which only further demonstrates the length of time needed, and whilst the committee members did their best to help we must note that it was the dedication & commitment of our chairman, treasurer and secretary that has finally got the document sent off and whether we are successful or not, the residents of Ilton do owe a great deal of thanks for all the hard work put in over the past couple of years. we really do hope we are successful so that we can continue to keep our community together ~ a strength we have been working on over the past two years and as most of you will hopefully agree is, at last, coming together.

Our Thanks...............

We would like to personally thank the following people for their help of fundraising over the recent months, we do appreciate all of your efforts and kindness;
~ Mrs Sam Watson for raising £86.00 selling hampers during 2002
~ The whist club for their continued support, last year a total of £1,100 was donated to the hall
~ Gary (landlord of the Wyndham Arms) for the donation of the prize money for the skittles evening - a total sum of £240 was made and then equally divided between the hall, church and school
~ Anita Cox for running a sign language course and donating all entrance money to the hall (currently still taking place)
~ Mrs Rachel Follett for her kind donation of a microwave for the hall.

We would also like to thank all of the groups that continue to use the hall - as we have already said we do hope to have a brand new hall for all of you soon, and we would especially like to thank the parish council for their continued support and encouragement.

AGM..............

Please keep a look out over the next couple of months for the posters of our annual AGM ...... we would love to see as many of you as possible and we always welcome people who would like to join our committee!

Look elsewhere in this newsletter for a competition with a chance to win a bottle of wine, details of our most ambitious project yet.....the Ilton village fete, results of the survey and a chance for all
the 5 - 12 year old girls to become Miss Ilton! Back to top
