St. Peter's Church Ilton.
Early notice of our Fete which will be held on the Village Green on Saturday 9th June, 2.30pm.- 4.30pm. Everyone is welcome! We hope to see many of you there.

This year we would like to have a display of crafts of any kind on show in the Church during the afternoon of the Fete. If you have any craftwork which you have made and would like to display it in the Church during the Fete, please contact Jack Blasdale (53907) or Chris Lock (53142) as space will be limited, please let us know as soon as possible.

Morning Praise.

Please do join us in the Church on the third Sunday of each month at 11.00am for a short informal service which is run by ourselves. Everyone is most welcome. However at present we are without anyone to play the accompaniment for the hymns. If you know of anyone who would be willing to play 3 or 4 hymns once a month, then please contact Chris Lock (53142) or Rob Allen (57109). Using a keyboard, if preferred, instead of the organ would be very acceptable. We would be very grateful if there is anyone who could help us. Back to top

A thought from Jonathan
Do you ever have that feeling that what you are about to say should have been done earlier than it is? Well, your Vicar is certainly feeling that way because he had been hoping to talk, before this, about the new services which the Church of England recently introduced.

In fact, you've probably seen mention of the new services in the newspapers where the journalists gave them rather a hammering with questions like "why is the Church of England revising it's Liturgy?"

Of course the papers failed to mention that this is not a new process - it has been going on quite regularly over the centuries because worship has developed as the world has changed. For instance Carol Services and Harvest Festivals are services which have their roots in the Victorian period, and so aren't featured in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

In 1906 a Royal Commission suggested that a new service book was required and this, after a lot of work, led to the 1928 Prayer Book. Forty years later we saw 3 different orders before the Alternative Service Book of 1980.

The replacement for the Alternative Service Book , is called Common Worship and the new services contained in it have changes in style and emphasis to work with the changing patterns of society.

As well as the Baptism and Holy Communion Services there are changes to the order of Services for Weddings and Funerals together with special prayers for certain parts of the year - for instance Christmas and Easter.

I have found that I've quite enjoyed using the new services so far, I think nearly everyone I have spoken to has described them as being better than the ones we were using up to December 2000, which were beginning to feel quite dated (even to the Vicar!!!).

If you haven't seen the new book yet you will find that another good thing about it is it didn't cost the Church lots of money - we produced our new orders for about 25p each and are enjoying using something with a slightly larger print, together with a very straight-forward layout. The Vicar only has to announce a variation for one prayer, rather than all the ones he used to...

So do feel free to come and "roadtest" a new one at our 9.3Oam First Sunday Holy Communion, or if you would like a less formal service there are always our 11am Third Sunday Parish Praise and 11.15am Fourth Sunday Family Service (only half an hour and a very short talk).

Of course if you are a person who enjoys the poetry of the 1662 Prayer Book this remains in use at our 8am Holy Communion on the Second Sunday in the month.

Every blessing,
Jonathan (the Vicar)

PS This year we have a Family Service for Mother's Day on March 25 at 11.15am, a Choral Mediation at lOam on Good Friday and a service of Holy Communion on Easter Day, April 15, at 11.15am. Back to top

Police Report for Ilton Talking
For those of you that are unaware of the changes that have recently taken place at Ilminster Police Station, I thought that ILTON TALKING would be an excellent way of updating you all.

As from the 15th December 2000 Ilminster lost the responsibility for policing Martock which is now covered by Somerton Police Section.

On the 5th February 2001, Ilminster Police Section amalgamated with the Chard Section, leaving the three Community Beat Managers parading daily at Ilminster Police Station. These three officers have a beat each to cover and Ilton and the following villages make up my beat, which for operational purposes is referred to as FC 192.

Ilton/Ashford/Ilford/Rapps./Broadway.
Horton.
Ashill.
Beercrocombe.
Curry Mallet.
Fivehead/Swell.
Isle Abbotts.
Isle Brewers.

These three beat officers will remain on their beats and will not be diverted away to other areas unless their back up officers at Chard are committed.
This should allow the beat officers to provide a higher police presence within your community and a familiar face for all.

I have recently placed Police Notice Boards in my village shops and will keep you updated on any recent crime trends or incidents that I feel that you should be aware of.

I have already increased the level of both foot and mobile patrols on my beat, and I am due to visit my four schools in March with a PLAY SAFE video.

I look forward to seeing you all during the course of my work and I can always be contacted at Ilminster Police Station on 01275 818181 or on my voice mail 01935 402268 ext. 72470.

Parish Council News
The Parish Council meets monthly in the Memorial Hall. An opportunity is usually made available for Parishioners questions between 7.30pm and 8.00pm. This is to enable members of the community to raise any issues that may concern them and to see if the council can help in any way.
Please see the notice board for details of meetings. Councillors are- Mr. P Lonton - Chair, Mr. A Green - V/Chair, Mr. R Lock, Mr. R Artingstall, Mr. R Miller, Mr. D Amor, Mr. G Higginson, Mr. N Dewbury, Mr. I.Sherwood.The Clerk is Mrs. C. Churchill.

Helicopters.
You may have been aware of some posters that were put around the village regarding a meeting at Curry Mallet to discuss the helicopter movements and the possibility of more helicopters when the harriers leave Yeovilton. Parish Councillors from all Councils around the Yeovilton and Merrifield airfields were invited to attend.
A couple of members of Ilton Parish Council attended and one of the suggestions to come from the meeting was that a representative from each Parish should get together to seek better liaison with Yeovilton regarding their activities.
The council are waiting to receive further information.

Skating Area and BMX Track.
Following a survey among young people in Ilton regarding the type of recreational activities they would like to see. The District Council are supporting the idea of providing a Skating and BMX area in the village. Funding is being made available by the District Council, a contribution from the Parish Council and from other various grant agencies such as the National Lottery and RDA.
The Parish Council supports the idea in principle as it will provide recreational activities aimed at the older children in the village. futher details will be made available when we have them.
Dog fouling
This is still causing a problem around the village especially between Pennys Meade and Spurwells and Copse Lane. There are fines for anyone who is caught allowing their dog to foul and not clearing up after them. The local Dog warden has been informed and will hopefully be keeping an eye out.
Parked Cars
A number of vehicles around the village are parking on pavements. This can make it difficult for the elderly disabled and people with prams etc. to pass safely. Please think of others when parking your vehicle Back to top
