A thought from Jonathan
With the recent gloriously sunny weather (this is being written at the end of May!), I'm sure that travel agents have had scores of visitors planning their holidays. Our understanding of the word "holiday" is that of "a break, a chance to relax, a change of routine".
However, if you look closely at the word you find the original meaning is "holy-day". This also had the understanding of "a break, a chance to relax, a change of routine" because the days covered by this word, such as Christmas and Easter, were originally the only time many people were allowed a respite from work.
Naturally the origins for this are in the Bible, for in the story of Creation we find God resting on the seventh day, after He had completed the making of the world.
This reminds us that God is our creator and that everyone needs a break from the daily routine.
That break may not necessarily mean going away, but perhaps a change of pace or the chance to catch up on tasks not associated with the daily round.
Whatever else, a holiday is the making of time for oneself, one's family and friends for we are also reminded in the story of Creation of God's words "it is not good for man to be alone
Although that is commonly thought to be a reference to Eve, perhaps we should think of it more as an exhortation to spend time with God, for it can be so easy to shut Him out of our plans and preparations, rather than allowing Him to be part of them.
If we are going to get the best out of our breaks then we do need to think of them not in terms of "for ourselves alone" but rather give others, especially God, a chance to contribute, for sharing brings enrichment to our lives.
In fact, it's surprising what we can achieve if we work together, with others and especially with God.. So have a happy "HOLY-DAY" whatever you are planning!
Every blessing,
Jonathan (the Vicar)
